LA LEONA DAY TRIP

Full Day Adventure
La Leona, Corcovado National Park

Departure at 5:30 AM from Puerto Jiménez, returning at 2:30 PM to Puerto Jiménez.

On this expedition, we’ll travel by car for approximately 1.5 hours to reach Carate. Along the way, we may spot various bird species and monkeys. Upon arriving in Carate, we’ll embark on a 3km hike to Leona. Once in Leona, we’ll enjoy beautiful trails such as Madrigal, visit the cemetery used by early settlers before the area became a National Park, explore rock formations that create caves visible during low tide, and appreciate the stunning flora and fauna that define Leona.

If you don’t have your own vehicle, an additional $30 per person is required for shared transportation.

This tour offers a half-day exploration of the Leona area within Corcovado National Park. Starting early in the morning, we’ll travel by 4×4 to Carate and then hike to Leona, where we’ll explore various trails, historical sites, and natural wonders. Highlights of the tour include the opportunity to see diverse wildlife, explore unique rock formations, and learn about the area’s history.

Corcovado, founded in 1975, is located on the Osa Peninsula in Puntarenas Province. It boasts approximately 2.5% of the world’s biodiversity. Undoubtedly, it’s the perfect place to observe various animal species such as:

  • Baird’s tapir, white-nosed coati, collared peccary, howler monkey, white-faced capuchin, two-toed and three-toed sloths, river otter, tayra, crab-eating raccoon, coati, kinkajou, agouti, tayra, nine-banded armadillo, red-tailed squirrel, and various rats and mice, bats, bottlenose dolphins, and two species of whales.
  • Birds such as: parakeets, trogons, toucans, cotingas, woodpeckers, tanagers, herons, doves, kingfishers, vultures, eagles, hawks, macaws, owls, pelicans, and frigatebirds.
